I managed to turn on the TV regularly and witness the impact of the New Orleans disaster. Investment managers are not paid to be nice, caring humans. In times such as this you are supposed to assimilate all the new data and come to some profound thesis. So far, all I've been able to do is thank the lucky stars that gave us lots of oil-related securities.

You may remember my column of about eight weeks ago when I recommended a variety of stocks in this sector. Many readers astutely noted at the time that I generally ignored the really large Canadian producers, which, of course, was a big mistake as they have been the best performers in recent months.

The reasons are simple: Medium-sized and small oil and gas companies may have significant growth potential but the major companies have long-term reserves and thus the increase in commodity prices has dramatically increased their net asset value. For the record, we have been buying them and reducing our holdings in some of the medium-sized names that have served us so well. The big companies remain cheap and, secondly, if for some reason the boom in oil and gas securities were to come to a quick end, it is nice to have some big liquid stocks as part of your portfolio.

Now for something completely different. I would like to briefly address the topic of Warren Buffett of Omaha. He continues to retain the investment world's No. I have long dreamed of writing an article puncturing the image of this gentleman.

It is not because there is any intellectual flaw to his thinking. It is simply a matter of noting that his image is so overwhelmingly positive that few notice that some cracks are appearing in the story. If you pay close attention, you will note that many investment managers claim that their success is heavily attributable to the fact that they have followed Mr.

Buffett's lead so closely. Upon close examination you will see that may not always be the case. Buffett generally avoids commodity-related companies because they are inherently unpredictable. Nevertheless, a widely heralded successful fund manager with a pile of oil securities in his portfolio publicly attributed much of his success to Mr.

Another basic tenet of the so-called Oracle of Omaha is that he only wants to buy securities when they're cheap. This is, of course, quite admirable, although not that practical for most investment managers.
